My First Week at DOW

Hello! My name is Emily and I am a Freshman at Susquehanna University. I am currently double-majoring in Creative Writing and Editing & Publishing. I am from Downingtown, Pennsylvania and I enjoy writing and dance.
I am the Social Media and Digital Storytelling Intern here at Deaf Open World. My responsibilities include updating and maintaining the DOW website, creating and updating the DOW Instagram page, writing and running the DOW blog, and creating various digital materials to spread information about DOW’s mission and work supporting deaf youth in Swaziland. I am extremely excited to jump into these responsibilities and help DOW reach their ideal audience!
In my first week, I learned many interesting things about both this organization and the deaf community we are working with. Because my intern responsibilities focus on digital storytelling, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about each of the 8 students DOW is currently supporting in their educational endeavors. Each student is lively and unique. The most important thing I learned is that although they are deaf, they don’t view this as a disability. They don’t let these circumstances keep them from achieving their goals. I have been absolutely inspired by the resiliency of each student and cannot wait to share their stories with you through our social media!
I am really looking forward to the wonderful experiences I will get out of working with Deaf Open World and seeing how I can do my part to serve this organization!
